“If Allah were to punish people for their wrong actions, not a single creature would be left on Earth.” (Qur’an, 16: 61)
In this article, we will be talking about Allah’s great Love and Mercy towards human beings in regard to the following five points in brief…
1- The creation of human beings.
2- Human beings were created sinless.
3- The way people’s good and bad deeds are recorded.
4- Repentance.
5- Deeds that wipe sins out.
And lastly, a brief word about those whose repentance won’t be accepted by Allah.
1- The creation of human beings
People will see Allah’s grace upon them, as well as His eternal mercy and compassion, when they reflect on how they were created, received life, and have been carefully protected from the moment of their birth until this very moment.
Allah calls upon people to reflect on their creation in the following verse:
“Does not humanity recall that We created it when it was nothing?” (Qur’an, 19: 67)
Allah places the fetus in the most protective situation, thereby preventing the resulting child from becoming disabled or experiencing pain and suffering.
Whatever a baby needs was created billions of years ago.
From the air that he breathes to his mother’s milk that contains every nutrient he requires, everything is ready for him.
Every person’s body is protected throughout their life within the faultless system that Allah has created.
For example, each person’s heart beats without stopping, even though a person does nothing to ensure this.
If he had to ensure that his heart beat every second of his life, his life would become unbearable, for he would be unable to sleep, eat, or do anything else but think about his heart beating.
However, Allah has ordered each persons’ heart to beat from the moment of life to the moment of death.
As a result, He ensures that each person’s heart will never stop beating, even for a second.
A person has no final control over his or her body, despite asserting the opposite.
Our Most Glorious Lord is the sole controller of each part of a person’s body.
A person cannot independently control and manage the blood traveling with great speed, how much blood the heart pumps, how long it takes to coagulate, and all of the various systems (e.g., respiratory, digestive, immune, nervous, and so on) existing within his body.
A person is dependent upon Allah for everything, as Allah reveals:
“O humanity. You are the poor in need of Allah, whereas Allah is the Rich Beyond Need, the Praiseworthy.” (Quran, 35:15)
Every morning when you wake up, you see that your body works perfectly so that you can live. You breathe with ease, and see a colorful world without exerting the slightest effort.
You will hear noises clearly, sense all the smells with ease, and eat whatever you desire. You do not have to focus and dwell on where the vitamins that you consume in your food are sent, how your immune system operates and interacts with microbes and viruses, how your brain produces images of a piece of furniture, or any other details.
Without any exertion, you can recall what you did yesterday or many years ago and store all of this information in your memory.
Most importantly, despite having a body that operates according to sensitive balances, you will be in good health, for Allah is constantly controlling all of your systems.
This is why people should reflect on the faultless systems and innumerable blessings that our Lord has bestowed upon them.
As Allah reminds us in the Qur’an:
“O humanity. What has deluded you in respect of your Noble Lord—He Who created you, formed you, proportioned you, and assembled you in whatever way He willed?” (Quran, 82:6-8)
Therefore, if a person were to look at his body, a great deal of evidence could be found to lead him to acquire a profound and great love of Allah.
In addition, the universe contains many details, all of which represent innumerable blessings bestowed on people.
All of these extraordinary blessings are created and protected by our one and only Lord: Allah.
Those who reflect on these details see that they are constantly dependent upon Allah, Who has created them and enabled them to live.
Without His consent, they could not even breathe.
Thus, they can understand that Allah is their closest friend and guardian.
Allah informs us of this reality in the following verse:
“There is no way out for you in Earth or heaven. You have no protector or helper besides Allah.” (Quran, 29:22)
Allah is full of love and kindness to His creation.
All blessings and goodness in this world and the next are clear proofs of His Mercy.
Indeed, Islam teaches that God is more merciful toward us than our own mothers.1
The Prophet once saw a woman searching for her child in order to breastfeed him.
The moment she saw him, she gave him a tight hug, and started breastfeeding him.
When seeing this, the Prophet then said to his companions:
“Do you think that this woman would ever throw her child into the fire?”
The companions replied:
“No! She would never do that!”
The Prophet then replied:
“Allah is more merciful to His servants than this woman to her child!”2
How can it be otherwise, when some of Allah’s names and attributes include:
• The Acceptor of Repentance3
• The Compassionate4
• The Loving5
• The Forbearing One6
• The Most Gracious7
• The Most Merciful8
• The Most Generous9
• The Bestower10
These names all indicate that Allah is characterised by mercy, goodness and generosity.
They testify to the vastness and perfection of His mercy, which He blesses all of His creation.11
A spouse is another of the greatest of mercies and blessings of Allah, a means to tranquillity and affection.
“And of His signs is that He created for you, from yourselves, mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy.
Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.” (Qur’an 30:21)
These blessings are only a sample of the blessings given to humanity, for in a following verse, Allah proclaims:
“If you tried to number Allah’s blessings, you could never count them. Allah is Ever-Forgiving, Most Merciful” (Surat an-Nahl, 18).
2- Human beings were created sinless
Rationally considered, it would be the height of injustice to condemn the entire human race for the sin committed thousands of years ago by our first parents.
Sin is a willful transgression of the law of God or the law of right and wrong; hence, the responsibility or blame for it must lie only on the person committing it and not on his children.
It is a grave injustice to consider man sinful at birth.
Islam condemns the dogma of Original Sin and regards children as pure and sinless at birth.
Sin, it says, is not inherited but is something that one acquires by doing what he or she should not do and by failing to do what he or she should do.12
The Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) clearly stated that every child is born a Muslim,13 and then his/her parents convert him/her to another religion.14
In another Hadith, the Prophet narrated how when he met the Prophet Abraham in Paradise, there were playing around him all of the children of the world who died before reaching puberty.
When the Prophet’s companions asked,
“Including the children of the non-Muslims?”
The Prophet’s answer was in the affirmative.15
That’s because the recording of good and bad deeds by Allah’s Angels doesn’t take place in one of three cases; these cases are mentioned in the following Hadith:
“Three [types] of people don’t have their deeds recorded; a child until he reaches puberty, an insane man until he comes to his senses, and one who is asleep until he wakes up.”16
Moreover, Allah says:
“And We (i.e., Allah) never punish [people] until We have sent [to them] a Messenger [to give warning].” (Quran 17:15)
As for the sin of Adam, the Quran tells us that he repented for his sin.
God revealed to him words with which to repent, which He then accepted from him.
“Then Adam received Words [of forgiveness] from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance.
Verily, He is the One Who repeatedly accepts repentance, the Most Merciful.” (Quran 2:37)
Through God’s acceptance of Adam’s repentance, Adam was cleansed of the sin which he committed.
Even if we were to say that Adam did not repent, that stain is not passed on to further generations.17
Allah clearly states:
“…No person earns any [sin] except against himself [only], and no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another…” (Quran 6:164)
3- The way people’s good and bad deeds are recorded
Firstly, Allah clearly states:
“…No person earns any [sin] except against himself [only], and no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another…” (Quran 6:164)
This means that no one will be punished by Allah on behalf of anyone else.
Secondly, Allah doubles people’s good deeds by ten to seven hundred times, while does nothing to the bad deeds.
In fact, abstaining from committing a bad deed after intending to committing it before, will get you one good deed recorded.
Allah said:
“Whoever comes [on the Day of Judgement] with a good deed will have ten times the like thereof [to his credit], and whoever comes with an evil deed will not be recompensed except the like thereof; and they will not be wronged.” (Qur’an, 6: 160)
The Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) also said:
“Verily, Allah has ordered [His Angels] that the good and the bad deeds [of human beings] be written down [to be as evidence for or against him on the Day of Judgment].
Then He explained: He who intends to do a good deed but does not do it, then Allah will record it for him as a full good deed; but if  he carries out his intention, then Allah, the Exalted, will write it down for him as from ten to seven hundred folds, and even more.
But if he intends to do an evil act but does not do it, then Allah will write it down with Him as a full good deed, but if he intends it and then does it, then Allah will write it down as one bad deed.”18
Thirdly, when a man repents and turns back to Allah, all of his sins will be replaced with good ones.
Allah said:
“Except for those who repent, believe and do righteous work.
For them Allah will replace their evil deeds with good.
And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.” (Qur’an, 25: 70)
The quotes mentioned above, are yet another fact that Allah is so merciful and loving toward his creation.
4- Repentance
Forgiveness of sins is another example of Allah’s great love and mercy, as Allah knows we are fallible.
However, since Allah is the possessor of infinite mercy, He always gives us the opportunity to stop sinning and ask for forgiveness, so long as we are alive.
This is manifest in the following verse:
“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah.
Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.’” (Qur’an, 39 :35)
In fact, Allah loves those who constantly repent and ask for forgiveness.
Allah said:
“Allah loves those who frequently turn to Him in repentance and those who purify themselves.” (Qur’an, 2 :222)
The Prophet even said:
“If you did not commit sins and turn to Allah seeking His forgiveness, He would have replaced you with another people who would sin, ask Allah’s forgiveness and He would forgive them.”19
The Prophet also said:
“Allah is more delighted with the repentance of His servant than one of you who suddenly finds his camel laden with supplies after losing it in a barren land.”20
The following Qudsi Hadith21 gives man the hope that no matter how many sins he commited throughout his life, Allah can easily forgive him if he turns back to Him.
“O son of Adam, I forgive you so long as you pray to Me and ask for My forgiveness, whatever sins you have committed.
O son of Adam, If your sins were to reach the height of the heaven, then you ask for my forgiveness, I would forgive you.
O son of  Adam, if you were to come to Me with an earth load of sins, and meet Me, ascribing no partner to Me,22 I would match it with an earthload of forgiveness.”23
The Prophet also says:
“Allah, the Exalted, stretches His Hand during the night so that those who committed sins during the day may repent, and He stretches His Hand during the day so that those who committed sins during the night may repent. He keeps doing so until the sun rises from the West (i.e., until the end of time).”24
Allah also says:
“…He who comes closer to Me one span, I come closer to him a cubit; and he who comes closer to Me a cubit, I come closer to him a fathom; and if he comes to Me walking, I come to him running.”25
5- Deeds that wipe sins out
Another example of Allah’s great love and mercy is manifest in the fact that Allah has put deeds that, when done, wipe out man’s sins.
Below we see some examples of those deeds…
- Being kind to other creatures
The Prophet narrated to us the following beautiful story:
“While a man was walking on his way he became extremely thirsty.
He found a well, he went down into it to drink water.
Upon leaving it, he saw a dog which was panting out of thirst.
His tongue was lolling out and he was eating moist earth out of extreme thirst.
The man thought to himself: ‘This dog must be extremely thirsty as I was.’
So he descended into the well, filled up his leather sock with water, and holding it in his teeth, climbed up and quenched the thirst of the dog.
Allah appreciated his action and forgave his sins.”
The Companions [of the Prophet] asked:
“Are we rewarded [by Allah] for showing kindness to animals too?”
He said, “A reward will be given when kindness is shown to any living creature.”26
- Performing Wodoo’ (Ablution)
The Prophet said:
“When a servant [of Allah] washes his face, every sin he contemplated with his eyes will be washed away along with the last drop of water; when he washes his hands, every sin they committed will be washed off from his hands with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin towards which his feet have walked will be washed away with the last drop of water. So that he comes out pure from all sins.”27
- Performing Salat (Formal Prayer)
The Prophet said:
“Say, if there were a river at the door of one of you in which he takes a bath five times a day, would any soiling remain on him?”
The Prophet’s Companions replied, “No soiling would be left on him.”
The Prophet said, ”That is the five (obligatory) Salats (prayers).
Allah obliterates all sins as a result of performing them.”28
- Performing Friday (Jumu’ah) Salat
The Prophet said:
“If anyone performs Wudu’ properly, then comes to the Friday prayer, listens to the Khutbah (i.e., Imam’s lecture) attentively and keeps silent, his [minor] sins between that Friday and the following one will be forgiven, with the addition of three more days…”29
- Fasting
The Prophet said:
“Every slave of Allah that fasts one day for Allah’s sake, Allah will put him the distance that can be covered by 70 years from Hell.”30
The Prophet also said:
“He who fasts the month of Ramadan out of faith and seeking its reward from Allah, will have his past sins forgiven.”31
- Making Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca)
The Prophet said:
“Whoever makes pilgrimage to this House (Ka’ba) and does not have sexual relations with his wife nor commit sins (during Hajj) will return (sinless) the way his mother bore him.”32
- Making Omrah (Minor Hajj)
The Prophet said:
“The sins done between two Omrahs (Umrahs) are expiated by them.”33
- A brief word about those whose repentance will not be accepted by Allah
There are two types of people whose repentance won’t be accepted by Allah.
The first is one who is involved in the mortal sins of Shirk and disbelief and dies before having repented from them, even though he repented from all the other sins.
Allah said:
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.
And he who associates others with Allah has certainly fabricated a tremendous sin.” (Qur’an, 4:48)
Allah also said:
“Those who denied (i.e., disbelieved in) Our Signs (i.e., Allah’s Revelations, Verses, Miracles in creation, etc.) and the meeting of the Hereafter – their deeds have become worthless.
Are they recompensed except for what they used to do?” (Qur’an, 7:147)
Therefore, one must first repent from these two sins before any other sin.
The second is one who repents at the moment of death.
Allah said:
“But repentance is not [accepted] of those who [continue to] do evil deeds up until, when death comes to one of them, he says,
‘Indeed, I have repented now,’ or of those who die while they are disbelievers.
For them We have prepared a painful punishment.” (Qur’an, 4:18)
The Prophet (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) also said:
“Allah, most Great and Glorious, will accept His sevant’s repentance until his death rattle begins.”34
